Ada Friedman’s art is rooted in paint, routine, and ritual. Herpaintings exist in different fields of action and poetry; of varyingspaces of concreteness, collaboration, and interiority. Works aretypically double-sided, each side a painting unto itself and part ofa multifaceted whole. Moved by the artist’s holistic drive to makeworlds, her approach to the medium transforms paper - her primamateria - and discreet collections of random materials intosymphonic accord for adventurous, graceful paintings.
Friedman has had recent solo and two-person shows at Kendra JaynePatrick, Bern, Switzerland (2022); Grifter, New York City (2019);and Safe Gallery, Brooklyn, New York City (2018). Her work wasincluded in ‘The Living Room,’ a curated showcase of ‘artists towatch’ at Art Genéve art fair, Geneva, Switzerland, (2023). She hasbeen included in group shows at Cleopatra’s, Brooklyn; Situations,NYC; Adds Donna, Chicago; and Redling Fine Art, LA, among manyothers. Her plays or time-based paintings have been staged in NYC atAll Saints Church, Essex Flowers, Safe Gallery, and White Columns.
She will make her art fair debut at Art Basel Miami Beach 2023 witha solo presentation of new paintings at Kendra Jayne Patrick.She holds an MFA from Bard College in Painting, where she was therecipient of the Hartog Travel Grant and has participated inresidencies at such places as Shandaken Projects, NY; Autocenter,Berlin; and Clay Break at The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.She is currently a Visiting Artist/Lecturer in Painting and Drawingat the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (2021-22).
